THE JOY HARLAND MEMORIAL PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPETITION

2008 Winners

2007 Winners

The Joy Harland Memorial Photographic Competition is open to all members of the Horticultural Media Association Australia nationwide and is conducted bi-annually, by HMA (Vic) Inc. The competition commemorates the work and talent of photographer and HMA (Vic) member, the late Joy Harland.

The competition calls for pictures suitable for use as HMA News covers - vertical shots are preferred, though horizontal pictures that could be cropped to vertical are acceptable. Although 35mm or larger transparencies are preferred, submitted images can be in any photographic medium. It is important to note that the organising committee reserves the right to use any of the submitted pictures in HMA News. As Joy's interest lay in quality horticultural photography, the subject matter should be confined to horticultural subjects. Innovation and creativity are essential criteria in selecting the finalists.

Winners: Joy Harland Memorial Photographic Competition 2008
The Joy Harland Memorial Photographic Competition was held in 2008 as well as in 2007  to get back in sync with holding the competition in a non-Laurels year.

The 2008 winner was Jim Fogarty (Vic)

Judges comments:
"A bold, happy image with good central interest and full of appeal.

Strong, well balanced composition, pleasing use of focus and blurred background. A straightforward shot superbly executed. Definite cover material."

Highly commended -
 Adam Woodhams (NSW)

Judges comments:

"Rich, colourful composition packed with impact and interest. Short depth of field works well, drawing the eye into the kangaroo paw’s central area while allowing the outer parts to drift out of focus yet maintaining their prehistoric looking beauty."

Highly commended -
Libby Cameron (NSW)

Judges comments:

"Stunning depiction of the complexity and intriguing beauty of nature at its colourful best.  Simply framed with good central focus and background blurring, given added interest through the emerging flower bottom right."

The 2007 winner was Lorraine Deroon of HMA (Vic) with her photograph entitled African Daisy.

Judge's comments:
A great selection of photos to choose from, it was a real pleasure viewing..... a bit tougher to make a decision though!  Outright winner - just one of many potential winners which Lorraine submitted
