Horticultural Media Associations

Garden Writers Association of America (GWAA)
The Garden Writers Association of America (GWAA) is an organization of over 1800 professional communicators in the lawn and garden industry.
GWAA is the non-profit association which provides leadership and opportunities for education, recognition, career development, and a forum for diverse interactions for professionals in the field of garden communication.

Garden Media Guild (UK)
The Garden Media Guild (previously the Garden Writers Guild) was set up in 1991 to bring together all the garden writers, photographers, broadcasters and allied trades. Its aims are to raise the quality of garden writing and broadcasting, and keep members up-to-date with what's going on in the world of gardening and horticulture.

American Society of Botanical Artists
This society is dedicated to promoting public awareness of botanical art and encouraging its development.

Gardening Media Resources

The Australian Copyright Council

Includes lots of downloadable information sheets.

Bulb.Com
This is the site for the US press office of the Dutch flower bulb industry.
It is designed as a working tool for the press and an "evolving encyclopaedia" of flower bulb related information. The "Journalists only" area has free-of-charge and copyright-free information and images for use by journalists.

Plant Breeder's Rights
A government web page which explains the concept of plant breeders' rights.

Garden Writers List
Penny Woodward has recommended this forum. Penny says "It is basically American in origin and was started by a member of the GWAA as a forum for Garden Writers and other people involved in horticulture. It has covered some really interesting areas including photography (slides, what sort of film, digital, the future etc), contracts, pay rates, obligations of editors and lots of other general information. There are lots of different writers, publishers and suppliers who already belong to the list and are willing to share their expertise. I have already obtained their help with a couple of subjects and found their suggestions very useful. Although it is at present very USA oriented, much of what they
discuss is also relevant to Australians in the field."
There is no fee or obligation. (Note: This list transferred to a new provider in late 2002 and the relevant link also changed).

National weed lists

A national list of garden thugs is available at richardson@weedinfo.com.au or the more up-to-date version from the original author, Rod Randall, at rprandall@agric.wa.gov.au

The list of 20 Weeds of National Significance is available at www.weeds.org.au

The 28 National Alert List of Environmental Weeds is available on
www.deh.gov.au/biodiversity/invasive/weeds/alert-list.html

To know if a plant is prohibited or permitted entry into Australia, interrogate the Australian Quarantine and Inspection import condition database (ICON) at www.aqis.gov.au/icon

State/Territory and local weed lists and contacts

To make contact with State/Territory government agencies, go through the national Weedbuster website at www.weedbusters.info.au. You can also become involved in Weedbuster Week in October each year or prepare media material to coincide with the national event. This site also has a fact sheet for gardeners about garden thugs.

Many State and local government agencies produce weed lists including garden escapees. Check with your local government. Each State/Territory has a declared or noxious weed list. These are available through www.weeds.org.au but check with each State/Territory government individually for recent updates.

The list of noxious weeds in Victoria is available as a Landcare Note from the Victorian Department of Primary Industries web site: www.dpi.vic.gov.au . Landcare Notes for a range of weeds in Victoria are available at this site.

To see which plants have been recorded as naturalised (become invasive) in Victoria, search the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne census of vascular plants of Victoria database at www.rbg.vic.gov.au/biodiversity/database/viclist/

You can see where some garden plants are invading in Australia by searching Australia's Virtual Herbarium on-line at www.chah.gov.au/avh/ but be aware that weed records in herbaria are quite poorly represented so the weeds may be a lot more widespread than the maps indicate.

Weeds in the nursery and garden industry

The Cooperative Research Centre for Australian Weed Management (Weeds CRC) has many information resources at www.weeds.crc.org.au

A number of Nursery Papers have been produced by the Nursery and Garden Industry of Australia and are available at www.ngia.com.au
